Error 32: Cannot access file because it is opened by another user

If a user ever receives an error # 32 whilst trying to open / close an engagement file then it is likely to be the result of one of the following examples:
  • Permissions of the share/user group do not have full access to the shared location.
  • Error occurred while compressing the CaseWare engagement file.
  • CDX files need to be re-indexed.

Try one of the following solutions:
  1. Permissions of the share/user group do not have full access to the shared location: This is normally the case when the permissions of the share/user group that the staff members are using are not correct.  If they do not have full access to the shared location, then they may receive this error because the file is being classed as read only.

  2. Error occurred file compressing CaseWare file: There may be an error within the file. If the file can still be opened try creating a backup of the engagement file:
    - Open the CaseWare file.
    - From the ribbon select File | Backup.
    - Select any folder on your hard drive (i.e. Desktop or My Documents) and click OK.
    - Try opening the Backup to see if it opens and compresses.

  3. CDX files need to be re-indexed: The user needs to:
    - Open the CaseWare file through Windows Explorer and delete all files within the folder with a CDX extension.
    - Re-Open the CaseWare file and it should re-index all the deleted files.
    - From the ribbon select Tools | Repair file and tick all the check-boxes, and click OK.
